It is a great pleasure to write the foreword for this book, Omics: Applications in Biomedical, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, edited by Debmalya Barh, Vasudeo Zambare, and Vasco Azevedo. The book provides exciting insights into practical applications of modern “omics” technologies to real-world problems in the field of life sciences. The word omics generally refers to globally utilized high-throughput methods in molecular biology and their applications. Although genomics usually refers to sequencing technologies dedicated to deciphering the DNA code of living organisms, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics provide us deeper insights into the behavior of key biochemical molecules (genes, proteins, and metabolites) in response to changing environmental conditions. Nowadays, we may add the word omics to other expressions. Glycomics for instance, if we refer to a range of research-assisting technologies that aid with studying the dynamic effects of perturbations to a certain biological entity, glycans in this example.
